By Cinthia Rico RAINSVILLE – The Plainview Bears swept both games of last Thursday’s baseball doubleheader at RTI Field against the Sylvania Rams.
Trey Rutledge struck out seven and gave up five hits while allowing two runs, winning the series opener 7-2.
The Bears got off to a strong start with Reagan Davis crossing home at the bottom of the first on a Braxton Henson sacrifice fly to right fielder Griffin Turner.
Senior Ephan Benjume and Rutledge both hit RBI doubles to help Plainview extend their lead to four runs in the bottom of the second.
William Grant scored on a passed ball to get the Rams on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, cutting the score to 5-1.
Grant Hampton scored on a Rutledge single, and Benjume scored on another Henson sacrifice fly as the Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the seventh, Jonah Gurley stole second and advanced to third before plating home on an error for Sylvania’s final run of the evening.
On the hill for Sylvania, Eli Mattox allowed seven runs on nine hits, striking out six and walking three over six innings.
Game Two: Plainview 11, Sylvania 2
Brayden Lingerfelt led the Bears to victory on the hill, surrendering no hits and one run over four innings while striking out five and walking one. Plainview’s starting pitcher, Cy Traylor, allowed two hits and one run over three innings while striking out one and walking three.
The Bears offense scattered 11 runs behind a five- and four-run inning as Plainview rallied to sweep the day and take the series with an 11-2 victory in game two.
Grant Hampton led the way for the Bears with three runs, going 2-for-4, while Traylor collected two hits, including a double play.
Logan Wilks started Sylvania on the mound, allowing seven hits and seven runs over four and two-thirds innings while striking out three and walking one. Jordan Goza entered out of the bullpen in relief, surrendering three runs on three hits over one-third of an inning.
Over the weekend, Plainview collected their fifth consecutive win, edging Coosa Christian 7-6 and Fyffe 2-1.
Sylvania took on North Jackson and Section, falling short 11-1 and 12-5.
