DERA Meeting
The DeKalb Education Retirees Association (DERA) will meet Friday, October 4 at the Ft. Payne Coal and Iron Building at 10:00 am. The guest speakers will be Superintendent Jim Cunningham, Ft. Payne City Schools and Superintendent Dr. Jason Barnett, DeKalb County Schools. Free flu shots will be available to all present with an insurance card, and health screenings will be available for those eligible. We will also be conducting our Toys for Tots toy drive at this meeting. All Ft. Payne City Schools, DeKalb County Schools, and NACC retired education employees are invited and encouraged to attend.
Senior Citizens Banquet
Mt. Carmel Wesleyan Church will host a Senior Citizens Banquet on, Saturday, October 5, serving lunch at noon. All seniors are invited to come out for food, fellowship, entertainment, and door prizes.
Rainsville First Baptist Church Fall Festival
Rainsville First Baptist Church will hold a Fall Festival on Saturday, October 5 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. There will be a BBQ Cook-off, car/truck/tractor show, corn hole tournament, and vendor fair. The church is located at 223 Church Avenue in Rainsville.
Toys For Tots
The 4th Annual Red Knights MC Alabama 15 will host a fundraiser bike ride on Saturday, October 5, at the Shiloh Fire Department. Registration for bikes begins at 10:00 am, with kickstands up at 11:00 am. A $20 donation per bike is requested for the ride. All proceeds go to Toys For Tots.
McNew Reunion
The McNew Family Reunion will be held on Sunday, October 6, beginning at 9:30 am, at the Lebanon Chapel and Cemetery on County Road 88 in the Lebanon Community. Bring a covered dish, pictures, and information. For more information, call Janice McNew at 256-524-2547.
Ceramics Club Bingo Event
The DeKalb County Council on Aging will host a Ceramics Club Bingo Event on Saturday, October 12 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. A $5 entry fee will include 4 Bingo cards, a dessert, and a bottle of water. BBQ plates may be purchased for an additional $5 each. Beautiful ceramics made by the Ceramics Club will be abailable for purchase, along with other items. There will also be door prizes. DeKalb Republican Breakfast Club
The DeKalb Republican Breakfast Club will meet on Saturday, October 12, at 7:30 am at Western Sizzlin in Fort Payne. The guest speaker will be Arnold Mooney, who represents Alabama House District 43. He is also an announced US Senate Candidate for the seat held by Doug Jones.
DeKalb County Genealogical Society
The DeKalb County Genealogical Society will meet on Saturday, October 12, at 10:00 am, in the DeKalb County Public Library. Larry Beane will speak on the Trail of Tears. Everyone is invited to attend.
5th Annual Scottsboro BBQ Festival
The 5th Annual Scottsboro BBQ Festival will be held in the Downtown Square in Scottsboro on Saturday, October 12. There will be a Backyard BBQ Competition with a $1,550 total payout, Kids-Q and Junior Grill Master Championship, People’s Choice Competition, Corn Hole Tournament, Kids Fun Zone, Barq-off, Dog Parade, live entertainment, Beer and Wine Garden, car show, Witches Ride, as well as arts/crafts and food vendors. Blake Cleveland Benefit Softball Tournament
The Blake Cleveland Benefit Softball Tournament will be held on Saturday, October 12, at the Fort Payne Sports Complex. The first 12 teams to sign up get a spot. It is $200 to enter, with a four-game guarantee. All proceeds go to help the family of Blake Cleveland with medical expenses. Blake is a freshman at Plainview, who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer and has begun treatment.

Run For Rescue
The Friends of DeKalb County Animal Adoption Center is set to host its third annual Run for Rescue 5K on Saturday, October 12, with on-site registration from 6:30, am to 7:30 am. The 5K run/walk will start at 8:00 am, and the kid’s 1-mile run/walk will follow. The location has changed this year to the Kiwanis Pavilion next to Wills Valley Rec Center in Fort Payne. Proceeds provide funds for the homeless animals of DeKalb County as well as raise awareness. Participants can pre-register online at raceonline.com by searching “Run For Rescue.” The 5K registration is $25 per person, and the kids’ run is for ages 12 and under and is $12 per participant. Those who do not want to run/walk, but wish to donate may do so. The runners’ bags have items such as Dairy Queen cards, free Chic-fil-A, and freebies and discounts from other local restaurants. The top overall male and female runner will receive a $100 American Express gift card donated by MIS GLOBAL. Door prizes will include a three-night stay in Mentone, free meals from our local restaurants, and gift cards from local businesses. Pets are welcome, but they must be leashed and be up to date on their rabies vaccination.
2nd Annual Ride For A Drug-Free DeKalb
The 2nd annual Ride For A Drug-Free DeKalb will be held on Saturday, October 12 at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center in Rainsville, with kickstands up at 10:00 am. This event is hosted by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and Northeast Corner Widows Sons MRA. Cost is $25 per vehicle and $5 for a passenger. This price includes lunch and T-shirt. All vehicles are welcome. There will be a 50/50 drawing, door prizes, live entertainment, and a Chinese raffle.
The 107th White Family Reunion
The descendants of the late Reverend Daniel Burgess White will host their 107th family reunion on Saturday, October 12, at Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church, with singing beginning at 10:00 am. DeKalb County Bama Club Meeting
The DeKalb County Bama Club will hold a meeting on Monday, October 14, beginning at 6:00 pm, at the First United Methodist Church Life Center. The speaker will be Patrick Murphy, who is the Head Softball Coach at the University of Alabama. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for students, or $150 for a table of eight. Senior Citizen Tai Chi Class
The DeKalb County Council on Aging will be holding Tai Chi Classes on Tuesdays from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, from October 15 to February 11. Tai Chi can help improve your health, balance, assist in fall prevention, and possibly help with arthritis, depression, and neurologic conditions, like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. This is a free 16-week session. Classes will be held at the Council on Aging in Fort Payne. Call 256-845-8590 for more information.
Senior Bingo
Wills Valley Rec Center will host Senior Bingo (ages 55 and up) on the third Wednesday of each month, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. A meal will be served each week, with the Rec Center providing the main dish and everyone else bringing a covered dish. The center is located at 4220 Godfrey Ave NE in Fort Payne.
Section Church Of God
The Section Church of God, located on 84 Hodge Road, would like to invite all children ages 4 thru 7 to Tiny Disciples Children’s Church each Sunday at 11:00 am. There will be a Bible storytime, crafts, and more led by Director Kelly James. Pastor Gary Nix and church welcomes all.
N.E. Alabama Marine Corps League

At 2:00 pm on the 1st Thursday of every month, the DeKalb Baptist Association Office located at 218 Parker Avenue in Rainsville hosts the New Beacon Hospice Grief Support Group. Everyone Welcome. Call 256-574-4622.
Alzheimer’s Association Support Group
The Alzheimer’s Association Support Group holds meetings on the third Thursday of every month. The meetings begin at 11:00 am at the Rainbow City First United Methodist Church. The church is located at 3208 Rainbow Drive in Rainbow City. For more information, call Olivia Kendrick at 256-454-4375.
Scottsboro 1st Saturday Cruise-In
The Jackson County Cruisers will host the “Scottsboro 1st Saturday Cruise-In” on the first Saturday of each month, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, around the Courthouse Square. Anyone who registers a car, truck, or motorcycle will be entered in the cash give away drawings, and will also get one entry in the Grand Prize drawing, which will occur at the October Cruise-In, but you must be present to win. 50-50 tickets will be sold for a chance to win half the money; the other half goes to Back-Pack for Kids to help feed children on the weekends. Enjoy good music, good food, good people, and Cool Cars. Vendors are Welcome.
