Members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) started their five-week stint working at DeSoto State Park on January 12. The group of eight volunteers was selected to make an “impactful difference in DSP while still preserving the park’s historical heritage.”
The mission of NCCC is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. The program focuses on six key areas in the community, including Disaster Relief, Economic Opportunity, Education, Environmental Stewardship, Healthy Futures, and Veterans and Military Families.
AmeriCorps works with communities and supports a variety of public-private partnerships and governmental collaborations to address local challenges through service. At DSP, much of this work involves enhancing accessibility for visitors within the park, along with preserving the park’s historical structures.
DSP Naturalist Brittney Hughes said some of the projects they’ve accomplished so far include:
- clearing brush from the CCC quarry during the low temperatures the week before last.
- scraped and painted the metal hiking bridge over the Straight Creek CCC Bridge.
- clearing brush from around Morris Branch CCC bridge and access road.
- clearing brush around the Straight Creek bridge.
- clearing trees along trails from storm damage.
- painting and cleaning inside the Country Store, Lodge, & Nature Center.
