RAINSVILLE – On Wednesday morning, September 20, a driver in an SUV was at Taco Bell when authorities believe he suffered a medical emergency. After leaving the Taco Bell drive-thru, the SUV traveled over the rock embankment onto Church Street and into the intersection of Church Street and Hwy 35. At the same time, an 18-wheeler was traveling west toward Northeast Alabama Community College. The SUV crashed into the wheel area of the trailer and was spun around and thrown into the direction of the bank. The SUV then crashed through the doors of Regions Bank.
The SUV caught on fire with the driver still inside. Thankfully, Rainsville Fire Chief Willimac Wright and Councilman Derek Rosson witnessed the crash. Chief Wright was stopped at the traffic light and rushed to the scene. Rosson was leaving Kelly’s Kitchen and ran to offer assistance. Together, they were able to pull the victim out of the vehicle.
MVN talked with one of the bank employees from Regions who was present during the accident. She stated that when the car crashed into the glass doors, it also hit the bank vault, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop. She felt this saved the driver from traveling through the bank and hitting those inside.
The victim was transported to a Huntsville hospital, but we have no details of his condition.
