Christmas Time’s a-Comin’
By Sherri Blevins
Christmas time’s a-comin’, Christmas time’s a-comin’, Christmas time’s a-comin’, and I know I’m going home. These lyrics make up the chorus to the song by the same name performed by Sammy Kershaw. This song sets the mood for the upcoming festivities in Rainsville this Saturday, December 5, 2020.
Mountain Valley News (MVN) and the Rainsville Chamber of Commerce’s Sounds and Scenes of Christmas contest begins Saturday night. It is not too late to enter the competition. Individuals, churches, or businesses may enter a Christmas display in the park depicting a favorite Christmas scene to decorate the city for the holiday season. Join ABC Hospice, Judge Jeremy Taylor, Merle Norman, South State Realty, Hospice of North Alabama, and Penny’s From Heaven in the competition for a chance to win cash and recognition. The first-place winner will receive $300.00, second-place $200.00, and third-place $100.00. Contact Sandy or Ruth at the Rainsville Chamber of Commerce by December 4, 2020, to reserve a spot. MVN will have a display in the park but will not be a part of the contest. A mailbox will be part of the display. We would love for children to place their letters to Santa inside the mailbox to help Santa get the message by publishing them in the paper. The Rainsville Chamber of Commerce and the City of Rainsville will have displays too, but not participate in the contest. The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite display on MVN’s Facebook page beginning Saturday night and lasting until Thursday, December 17, 2020.
Rainsville’s Christmas Parade is Saturday as well, beginning at 11:00 am. MVN will be throwing out newspapers to parade watchers that could contain more than the local news. Four papers will have $25.00 certificates inside, five papers will have one-year subscriptions inside, and five will have three-month subscriptions inside. If you receive one of the special editions, return the certificate inside to MVN (located at 450 Main Street W, beside the Mexican Restaurant) to collect your gift. The fun continues Saturday evening at 5:30 with a synchronized musical Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Rainsville City Park.
Rainsville is not the only city in DeKalb County hosting a Christmas parade on Saturday. Ider ‘s parade begins the same day at 1:00 pm, and Henagar completes the parade list with its celebration starting at 5:00 pm.
Plan to spend time with your family enjoying a hometown Christmas celebration.
