During its March 1, 2024 meeting, the DeKalb County Commission approved measures to help keep the county clean.
Sheriff Nick Welden requested that Carl White, Seth Butler, and Isiah Avila be hired as full-time road crew deputies and Donnie Morgan as a part-time road crew deputy. Sheriff Welden explained that his department receives hundreds of emails and complaints about trash along the roadside across the county, but especially near the landfill. The road crew will oversee the trash cleanup, concentrating on the twelve-mile stretch of road to the landfill. Welden felt the move would be good for the community, the landfill, and ultimately, the Sheriff’s Department by reducing the number of complaints received each day. Commissioner Saferite thanked Welden for his cooperation in finding a solution to the trash problem.
The Commission also designated April 3-6 and 10-13 as County Wide Spring Cleanup dates. On these dates, the landfill will provide free dumpsters for the public’s use.
The Commission approved the following items:
- Declaring a one-ton crew cab truck and a one-ton bucket truck as surplus
- Bucket truck bid award of $29,900 to Michael’s Tree Service
- Sheriff’s Dept. truck bid award of $59,995 to Donohoo
- Grand Estates Phase II Subdivision Preliminary Plat approval for Rickey and Tony Butts (19 new lots will be added)
- Resignation of Troy Fugatt as courthouse security
- Resignation of corrections officer Nathan Plamer and Sergeant William Watson at the jail
- Hiring Adam Thronton and Christina Blankenship as jail employees
- Promotion of Tyler Sparkman to sergeant
- Creating a Council-on-Aging (COA)Substitute Center Manager position
- Hiring Chad Wooten as a maintenance employee
COA Director Emily McCamy reminded everyone that the center offers free tax preparation for simple forms to anyone, regardless of age. They have two more dates available for twenty people. If you are interested, contact the COA.
The next meeting will be on April 9, 2024.
