Council Gives BOE Donation
On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, the Fort Payne City Council met. The council started the meeting with a generous presentation of $200,000.00 to the Fort Payne City School System. Superintendent Cunningham accepted the donation on behalf of the school system, students, and parents that will benefit from the donation. The school system will use $150,000.00 of the donation to purchase school supplies so children can show up the first day of school ready to learn without the worry of not having the correct materials. The school system divides the remaining $50,000.00 among the classroom teachers for the purchase of items for the classroom. That amount combined with the state’s contribution leaves the teachers with a total of $825.00 per classroom to purchase teaching materials for the year.
Russel Gulley addressed the council about the upcoming Alabama Community Scholars Institue (ASCI) sponsored by the Alabama Folk Life Association. The Association presents Sounds of Appalachia in Fort Payne starting June 19 and continuing through June 22. The ASCI is a multi-day training program that provides participants with the tools, skills, resources, and experience needed to document, present, and promote Alabama’s folk and traditional arts or folkways. The workshop is for individuals interested in Alabama’s musical and folklife heritage. For more information, call 205-956-9888 or email ten.ttaobfsctd@efilklofamabala.

Also, Councilmember Baine encouraged the public to visit the 200 Alabama Bicentennial Exhibit at the Robert Hunt Hall. It opens from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm daily with a special Open House on Thursday, June 13, 2019. The last day for the exhibit is June 28, 2019.
