RAINSVILLE, Ala.- Rainsville has jumped from 8th place to 3rd in SafeWise’s annual list of safest cities in Alabama.
The State of Safety Survey looks at violent crime and property crimes across the state and national level. In Rainsville, only 0.7 violent crimes and 2.3 property crimes were reported for every 1,000 residents out of the city’s population of 5,685.
According to the survey, 56% of respondents in Alabama reported concern for their safety, nearly 10 points higher than the national average of 47. Both property crime and violent crime saw drops, and this is the first year property crime has dipped below the national average.
The safest cities that made the list have an 84% lower crime rate than the rest of the state. The state’s violent crime rate fell from 6.0 per 1,000 residents to 4.8 this year. The state’s property crime rate declined 23% to 19.9 incidents per 1,000.
Rainsville Police Chief Michael Edmondson said it’s a team effort to keep the city’s citizens safe.
“Our jobs would be impossible to do without a mayor and city council that supports their police department and its officers, and I appreciate all of the dispatchers, investigators and officers for all the work that they do,” Edmondson said.
