Council congratulates first responders
RAINSVILLE, Ala- During the April 1, 2024, Rainsville City Council meeting, Councilman Blevins announced that Safewise named Rainsville the third safest city in Alabama. He credited the efforts of Rainsville’s first responders and City employees for this award. Members of the Rainsville Police Department were present at the council’s request, and many councilmen thanked them for their service.
Blevins stated, “I wanted to recognize these guys. They have done a great job. They work hard; they are a great group of guys. They are not only good police officers, but they are good guys.”
Chief Edmondson commended his department for their hard work. He said, “I can promise you (the award) is because of their hard work. I appreciate their hard work and the love they have for the City. It makes my job a lot easier when you have got good men working for you. I appreciate them and everything they do.”
Blevins also recognized the excellent work of the Rainsville Fire Department and thanked Chief Wright for the department’s service. Councilman Taheri added his thanks and appreciation to Chief Edmondson and Chief Wright. He applauded their spirit of cooperation and their ability to work together for the best interests of Rainsville.
Councilman Byrum congratulated Chief Edmondson. Byrum said, “When you have a good department, it always comes from a great leader. You guys make us proud to call Rainsville home.”
Councilman Rosson added his appreciation for the first responders and thanked them for their service.
During the business portion of the meeting, the Council approved the following items:
- May 1 through May 31 (from 7:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Monday through Friday and 8:00 A.M. through 4:00 P.M. on Saturdays) as Spring Clean-up ( Customers with the Rainsville Sanitation Department may bring unwanted items to the dumpster in the Rainsville City Park during these times.)
- Resolution 04-01-2024 approving $589,629.69 to Portland Utilities Construction Company, LLC for the Rehabilitation of Gravity Waste Water Collection System/Phase 1 (Manhole Rehabilitation)
- Proclamation declaring April as Fair Housing Month
- Authorizing Mayor Lingerfelt to sign a contract with Nikkie Austin to clean the Rainsville City Hall, Police Department, Fire Department, Library, and Municipal Annex for $500 per week
- Resignation of Noah Pope from the Rainsville Police Department
- Authorizing the police department to apply for a Homeland Security Grant for the purchase of a UTV and empowering the mayor to sign the application
- Authorizing Mayor Lingerfelt to borrow $18,949 from the facility loan for the new training facility
- $11,370 to DeKalb Refrigeration for heaters at the Rainsville Fire Department
- $1,600 to Johnny Clem Construction for labor and $1,750 for materials to expand the sewer line on 4th Street/ George Wallace to include three homes constructed by Rickey Butts
- $8,500 to Bottom Land Services to clear off property at the Agri-Business Center
Councilman Rosson reminded everyone who wanted to participate in the spring clean-up to bring their garbage bill with them when dumping items. The next meeting will be on April 15, 2024.
