Smith NACC Theatre Director
Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) has named Ms. Kayleigh Smith of Rainsville, Alabama as the college’s Theater Director, starting in the Fall Semester 2019. According to NACC President Dr. Campbell, current Theater Director, Mark Webb, who is legendary for his work in theater, is retiring in September.
Dr. Campbell commented, “Ms. Smith is extremely talented and experienced. She has essentially grown up in the NACC theater culture, but has substantial experience in other locations as well. She is passionate about theater and cares deeply about students. We are so happy to have her at Northeast.” Campbell added that Ms. Smith has also had the opportunity to work with and learn from outstanding, outgoing Director Webb.
Ms. Smith has served as a co-director of plays at NACC as well as acting in lead roles. She has worked as a choreographer for various theater companies, as well as serving as an Actor/Academy Instructor at Birmingham Children’s Theater, a Musical Theater teacher at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School in Montgomery, a Theater Teacher at Scottsboro High School, and Theater Director at Plainview High School. She served as choreographer for spring musicals at Jacksonville State University, where she obtained her baccalaureate degree. Ms. Smith has an associate degree in arts from NACC, and she is completing her master’s degree in theater from Regents University.
Theater at NACC has been an outstanding program since founded by the first director – Ann Everett. Under Mrs. Everett’s leadership and that of the late NACC President Dr. Charles Pendley, the college built the Tom Bevill Lyceum, where plays are conducted. Mark Webb was named Director in 2001, and under his creative abilities and leadership theater has excelled. Mr. Brad Archer serves as Technical Director, specializing in set design and construction, adding his great skills and abilities to productions and enhancing all plays with the college’s very popular Summer Theater Youth Workshop, which consistently sells out in minutes of registration. Local donors help support the program, although primary funding for NACC Theater operational costs, salaries, and facilities are provided by NACC.
“Under Ms. Smith’s leadership, I do not doubt that NACC Theater will continue to thrive and serve the college, our students, and the community,” Campbell stated.
