RAINSVILLE, Ala. – The Rainsville City Council voted five to one to approve Ordinance 04-15-2024 for the City’s camera system. Councilman Blevins read the highlights of the ordinance. The ordinance requires recording and monitoring equipment to be stored at the Rainsville Police Station. It also states that certain common areas of the Rainsville Annex Building, City Swimming Pool, City Shop, Council Chambers, City Court Chambers, and City Hall be recorded but not monitored. All other locations where cameras will be placed in the City of Rainsville will be recorded and monitored by the City Police Department. These areas shall include but not be limited to areas of Rainsville City Park, the Field of Dreams, and the Farmers Market. If the Mayor, Councilmen, or City Department Heads need to view certain footage, the Police Chief will make that footage available to them. All other individuals must have a subpoena to view camera footage.
Councilman Byrum wanted to assure the public that the cameras would not be used to issue speeding tickets but to enhance the safety of the citizens.
Additionally, the Council approved the following items:
- $3,500 to Envision Construction to repair and repaint the ceiling at the Rainsville Public Library
- Hiring Rylee Ferguson as a seasonal worker at the Rainsville Public Library during June and July
- Empowering the Mayor to sign a $30,000 Homeland Security Grant for the Fire Department to be used to obtain rope rescue and hazmat equipment
- Authorizing Sam Phillips to bid out paving projects for the following streets: Fortner, Chavies from Plainview School to the bridge, Maple, Scott, Browns Chapel, Everett, and the portion of George Wallace from Parker to Thompson Ave.
The next Rainsville City Council meeting is on May 6, 2024.
