Council Holds Regular Meeting
By Sherri Blevins
On September 3, 2019, the Fort Payne City Council met for its regular meeting. Councilmember Red Taylor still was recuperating from health issues and was unable to attend.
The council acted on the following items:
- Entertained the first reading of Ordinance 2019-03 annexing certain property located off of Roden Drive in the Fischer Community and solely owned by Marlin and Ann Blalock. The property is proposed to be a sub-division.
- Approved Resolution 2019-35 officially accepting the low bid, after negations, for the interior construction of the Public Works Building
- Approved Resolution 2019-37 was accepting the lowest qualified bid for the “Special Asphalt Mix” required by ALDOT for the Jordan Road paving project.
- Approved an Activity Permit request from Brandi Shrader for a DeKalb Animal Shelter adoption event at the City Park on Saturday, October 12, 2019, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm
- Approved installing a speed table on 66th Street in the vicinity of Allen Memorial Church
After the council conducted its business, citizens from the audience addressed the council asking for help with an animal issue at Fischer. The citizens described the mistreatment of dogs in the area at a particular residence. Allegedly, numerous dogs are left unsupervised for extended periods with little or no food or water. Neighbors have provided food to keep the animals from starving.
The city attorney advised the citizens to report the abuse to the District Attorney for possible action. The Council President then adjourned the meeting.
