Tutwiler Gap Is Open
The DeKalb County Commission met on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. After President Harcrow opened the meeting, DeKalb County Road Department Superintendent, Tom Broyles, delivered an update on the status of the road department. He reported that Tutwiler Gap reopened on Thursday, April 25, 2019, after the completion of road repair work. Work on County Road 835 (Old Hwy 35) and County Road 604 (Wade’s Gap) remains on hold until utilities are relocated on Wade’s Gap.
Emily McCamy, Director of Transportation and Council on Aging, reported on upcoming events the Council is hosting. On the first Thursday of each month, a Caregiver Support Group meets at the Senior Center in Fort Payne. On May, 2, at 10:00am, a published author will address the group speaking on dementia. Her presentation is entitled, “ The Real World Dementia Experience” and will provide hands-on experience for those present to experience some of the difficulties faced each day by dementia patients. The presentation offers simulations for blindness, deafness, tactile struggles, and other physical limitations real dementia patients struggle with each day. Free training for staff members who supervise dementia patients is also available.
McCamy announced a “Master’s Games Free Day” event coming up on May 30, 2019, at the Fort Payne Parks and Recreation Center. Seniors fifty-years-old and older qualify to participate in the Masters Games Competition held yearly. The purpose of the “Free Day” is to allow seniors to check out some of the twenty-eight events involved in the competition. Game participants will demonstrate several events, and anyone willing may also participate in the fun.
