FORT PAYNE – The Fort Payne City Council had a light agenda for the meeting on November 21, 2023. Mayor Baine reported that the Council could hear the outcome of its request for funding from Washington before January 1, 2024. He said the Council is considering another trip to Washington to continue its push for more funds for Fort Payne.
Baine stated that the building projects for the City are on schedule, and the work at the Police Department is still under budget. He thanked all City employees who participated in putting up the Christmas lights and decorations early. Baines said he had heard comments that some people plan to visit Fort Payne just to see the beautiful lights.
The Council approved the following actions:
• Setting December 19 as the date of a hearing to receive comments on the proposed vacation of an un-opened alleyway between 303 and 305 5th Street S.W. and property owners Vicky Kirby and Donner Waller
• Public hearing to receive comment on the proposed rezoning of 3.92 acres located at 1310 Airport Road W. from M-1(Light Industrial) to R-F (Rural Farm) and owned by Melanie Miller
• Ordinance 2023-13, rezoning the property mentioned above
• Resolution 2023-23, accepting the lowest qualified bid for the WZOB Pump Station upgrades
• Activity Permits for the Chamber of Commerce, Christmas Parade on Gault Avenue from 18th North to 3rd Street South on Friday, December 8, beginning at 6:00 pm
The Council announced earlier that John T. Davis and Kenneth Larkin’s terms on the Fort Payne Approvement Authority Board had expired. They spoke with Fort Payne Approvement Authority officials and were advised that it would be very helpful to complete the projects they are currently working on if the two members could be reappointed to new terms. The Council approved their request.
The next meeting of the Fort Payne City Council is on December 5, 2023. You may want to watch this one on MVN’s Facebook page because the Mayor and Council will be dressed in their “Tacky” Christmas attire.
