MONTGOMERY – Representatives from organizations representing Physicians and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) joined Gov. Kay Ivey at the Capitol today to celebrate a new law that supporters say could become a model for other states in how anesthesia care is delivered.
The new law clarifies the working relationship between physicians and CRNAs in hospitals, surgery centers, and physician offices where anesthesia is provided to patients.
Anesthesiologists are physicians with years of specialized training in anesthesia. In care settings where an anesthesiologist is present, the new law maintains the Anesthesia Care Team Model, where CRNAs work under the direction of an anesthesiologist. In the absence of an anesthesiologist, the new law specifically provides that CRNAs may coordinate with other physicians in those care settings who are not anesthesiologists (such as surgeons and gastroenterologists) to provide the anesthesia care needed for procedures. To ensure the safety of patients, the new law maintains the requirement that a physician be immediately available whenever anesthesia is being administered to a patient in Alabama.
The Medical Association of the State of Alabama worked with the Alabama State Society of Anesthesiologists and the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists to craft the bill along with sponsors Rep. Wes Kitchens and House Speaker Mac McCutcheon.
Dr. Julia Boothe, President of the Medical Association, stressed the positive outcomes when health organizations partner for the common good of patients.
“By working together, we were able to develop legislation all parties supported, something we believe could become a model for other states regarding provision of safe anesthesia to patients,” said Dr. Boothe. “We appreciate the Alabama State Society of Anesthesiologists, the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists, legislators, and Gov. Ivey for supporting this effort.”
The bill was HB 268.
