FORT PAYNE, Ala. – On April 9, 2024, Wayne Killian, a DeKalb County resident, visited the DeKalb County Commission meeting to share his concerns about the possible expansion of the Sand Valley Landfill. Killian first voiced his concerns at the February 13 public hearing on the topic. The Commission held a public hearing for comments on the revised DeKalb County Solid Waste Management Plans at that meeting, but they took no action at that time.
Upon introducing himself and sharing his deep-rooted ties with DeKalb County, Mr. Killian proceeded to voice the heart of his concerns. He stated, “I am very much aware that garbage is a necessary evil. I am not against a county landfill, and I want you to understand that. However, to bring waste from Georgia, Tennessee, and beyond our borders will never be a necessary evil in my county. Expanding the landfill area by over three times should not be in the best interests of the people of DeKalb County.”
The Commission approved the Solid Waste Management (10-Year) Plan at the meeting. Copies of the plan were distributed at the meeting.
Tim Young was approved as the new DeKalb County Road Superintendent. Superintendent Broyles retired earlier this year after several years of faithful service to the department. Young thanked the Commission for the job opportunity and proceeded to update the Commission on the department’s progress. Young said they are continuing to prep the roads for resurfacing. District 3 is ready, and they are working on District 2 now.
The Commission also approved the following requests:
- Hiring Leon Wells at the Road Department
- Sending out bids for new equipment at the Road Department
- Awarding the Pipe Liner Bid of $618,423.70 to Lambert Inc.
- Resignations of Heather Love and Gary Clifton as jail employees
- Hiring Logan Padgett as a jail employee
- Promoting Ethan Pike to Sergeant
- Travel and training requests for Tammy Mason and Tracy Hamilton to attend the spring Corrections Conference in Gulf Shores
- Resignation of Deloria Juanzetta White as manager at the Fyffe Senior Center
- Resignation of Erica Orr as manager at the Rainsville Senior Center
- Hiring Brenda Womack as manager at the Fyffe Senior Center
- Hiring Nedra Sharpley as manager at the Rainsville Senior Center
- TARCOG SHIP contract for $5,000
- Reappointing Chris Bryant to the Economic Development Administration Board
The commission will meet again on April 23, 2024.
