MAPCO and TORO Receive Approval
By Sherri Blevins
The Rainsville City Council has been busy during the last two weeks holding two different meetings. On Wednesday, January 24, 2021, the Council met for a public hearing to approve or disapprove requests for alcohol licenses. MAPCO Convenience Store, located at the corner of Hwy 75 and Hwy 35 near the Rainsville traffic light, was approved. Toro Restaurant, formerly known as Casa Poblano beside MVN, also received acceptance. Toro’s owners are remodeling the restaurant, so the restaurant’s opening date is unknown. Since the businesses received the City’s approval, the owners’ next step is to send the paperwork to the state for final approval.
On February 1, 2021, the Council held its regular meeting. During the work session, Councilman Taheri thanked the Rainsville Fire Department for their recent responses to 56 incidents. He also informed the public about the need to maintain their property and that the City would be looking more closely at neglected lots that needed condemning. Councilman Byrum stated that the Council’s attorney would need to address those situations to keep the City in compliance with its ordinances. Taheri agreed.
Police Chief Edmondson reported that February is Amnesty Month for those individuals with outstanding warrants. He urged those individuals to take care of the warrants to prevent further problems.
Fire Chief Williemac Wright told the Council the department had received the personal air packs (SCBA) they had been promised last year, paid for with $122,900.00 from grant money and $12,900 from City funds. Each device costs about $7,000.00, so the department received 18 SCBAs. Wright added that the equipment was well worth the time it took to apply and receive the grant.
During the regular meeting, the Council approved the following items:
- $10,520.00 to Jimmy Traylor Construction for the City Hall remodel of the Revenue and Mayor offices
- $9,740.00 to Monarch Carpet for refinishing of the Tom Bevill Center floor
