The Rainsville City Council met on June 3, 2019. The Council Discussed Boozer Bridge Project. Also, during the work session, Rainsville Fire Chief Willimac Wright explained the No Burn Ordinance that is in effect from now until the end of October. This ordinance is in effect to protect the air quality. Wright explained that citizens are allowed to burn natural vegetation as long as it is burned on the property where it grew. Citizens are not allowed to move the vegetation to a different property to burn. Burning of other items is prohibited.
Councilman Freeman announced that the city pool opened May 28 with record numbers attending and the Field of Dreams also had the largest crowd ever this past weekend with visitors attending the ball tournaments. He also reminded everyone that the Rainsville Farmers Market opens Thursday, June 6 at 3:00 pm for vendors and 4:00 pm for customers.
Adam Lea reported to the council on the revised cost estimate for the Boozer Bridge Project. This project will be a joint venture between the city and the county with assistance from the state. The new cost for the city is estimated at $335,000.00.
DeKalb County Board of Education Superintendent, Jason Barnett, addressed the council concerning two issues. First, he wanted to express his excitement at the possibility of Chance Williams, one of the first year Fire School graduates, becoming an actual Rainsville City Fireman. He also wanted to thank the City for the work performed on the DeKalb County Board of Education building.
Rainsville Chamber of Commerce Director, Sandy Goff, reminded everyone about the upcoming Rainsville Freedom Fest on June 29, 2019, stating that there are several vendor spots still available. She encouraged local businesses to take advantage of this great opportunity to connect with the public and promote their business.
During the official council meeting, the council acted on the following items:
• Start the bid process for the Boozer Bridge Project with the bid opening date set for August 1, 2019, at noon
• Approved $14,000.00 for sewer repair work on the Kilgore Subdivision area
• Approved $12,000.00 for sidewalk repair work at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center to make the sidewalks handicap accessible
• Approved $1,950.00 to purchase 15 round tables for the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center
• Approved $700.00 to purchase materials to repair the wall in front of the stage at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center
• Approved the purchase of two lock boxes for outside lighting at the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center
• Tabled opening an account for rental deposit money for the Tom Bevill Enrichment Center
• Approved Resolution 06-03-2019 declaring a 1994 Ford Dump Truck as Surplus
• Approved the resignation of Stephen Shassberger from the Rainsville Police Department
• Posted a job opening for the next seven days for a Rainsville Police Officer
• Approved the hiring of Chance Williams at a pay rate of $11.69 per hour as a Rainsville Fireman with the agreement he attends Rookie School and signs a four-year contract to work with the City of Rainsville
The council then agreed to pay the monthly bills, and the meeting was adjourned.
