During the December 20, 2022, Fort Payne City Council meeting, Mayor Baine reported that the contract with Mahogany Properties to purchase City property on Hwy 35 South had been canceled. This land was the proposed site for a new What a Burger in Fort Payne. Officials with Mahogany Properties said the land would not accommodate the building, but the company still would like to locate it in Fort Payne, so other properties are being considered. Mayor Baine stated that another party is interested in locating a business on the land on Hwy 35 but is not ready to release its name.
Mayor Baine invited everyone to make plans to attend the Comprehensive Master Plan Community meeting on January 19 at Little Ridge Intermediate School. This meeting is for the public to voice its opinion on what the future of Fort Payne should look like in the next twenty years. Councilmember Brewer stated that people of all ages need to attend to help plan for the future. The meeting will also allow everyone to tour the new intermediate school. Refreshments will be provided at 5:30 pm, and the meeting will start at 6:00 pm.
During the meeting, the Council took the following actions:
• Tabled Ordinance 2022-27, which would adopt the 2015 Building & Fire Codes, until a work session is held to discuss the ordinance
• $1,000.00 to CED Mental Health Center for the Youth Prevention Conference for area tenth graders on preventing drug abuse
• Resolution 2022-42 accepting the $8,384,384.00 low bid from Lambert Contracting for the installation of the lower leg of the sewer rehab project
• Authorized City Clerk Parker to seek bids for a new pool pump for the City Swimming Pool
• Set a work session to discuss adjusting rates for the Sewer and Sanitation Department and adjusting recreation and facility fees
The Council entered an executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss potential contract litigation.
