Bicentennial Volunteers Are Needed
This June, DeKalb County will help celebrate the Bicentennial of Alabama by hosting the “Making Alabama” traveling Smithsonian style exhibit that is travelling from county to county during Alabama’s Bicentennial celebration.
This exhibit provides a living history in audio and visual enhancements at a series of modular display units that each deliver a different aspect of our 200 year history. The purpose is to educate visitors and residents of the 200 year timeline of our state’s interesting and quite unique history. To honor our heritage, I encourage you and your families to participate in June by attending the free exhibit which will be hosted by the Fort Payne Bicentennial committee and housed at Hunt Reception Hall courtesy of Landmarks of DeKalb County, from Tuesday, June 4 through Friday, June 28.
We are very excited to have the exhibit right in the heart of Fort Payne’s historic district, in the Coal and Iron block, next to the hosiery Museum and near the Depot Museum and their annex.
The exhibit will be open from 10:00 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. We encourage you to come and to invite friends. Make it a trip for your clubs and churches. You will not want to wait 200 more years to see another exhibit about Alabama history.
We are asking for your help as a volunteer at the exhibit. You can volunteer a half day, a whole day or more. It is simple; you greet the visitors and show them to the first display module. All they have to do is touch the notebook screen on each unit and that will start the commentary about that piece of our history.
If you are willing to volunteer please contact me at DeKalb Tourism at 256-845-3957.
Thanks and please help if you can.
