Bears Buzzer Beater
By Kelsey Prose
The final seconds of the girl’s semifinal round of the DeKalb County Tournament was a nail biter and one to be remembered. The No. 1 Plainview Girls battled back and forth with the No. 4-seeded Ider Hornets throughout the entire game. After the Hornets led 8-5 at the end of the first, the Bears went on a 13-3 streak in the second quarter to take the 18-11 lead into halftime. The Bears continued with the momentum into the third at 26-16, but the Hornets went on their own run and closed the quarter with the 27-26 lead.
The fourth quarter was one of ups and downs and lead changes. Blevins was fouled and split her free throws to bring the Bears within one point (33-32) with 18 seconds left. Carson stole the ball away from Plainview with 10 seconds left. Plainview immediately fouled Ider’s Traylor, who missed both free throws with 5 seconds left to play. The Bears inbounded the ball to Jesi Fairris, who found Halle Brown open on the left-wing, where she threw up a 3-point buzzer-beater. The Bears snuck away with the 35-33 victory over the Hornets and advanced to the county championship game on Saturday, January 23. Payton Blevins brought in 11 points for the Bears, with Elaine Puckett scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds. Kaleigh Carson led the Hornets with 13 points, and Makinley Traylor added seven points.
