If you’ve seen the movie “The Revenant,” you are no doubt familiar with the scene where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Hugh Glass, is savagely mauled by a bear. Those who have seen it know that it’s difficult to watch. Such was the case Friday night at Plainview Stadium. The Bears beat the out-matched Brindlee Mountain Lions so badly, I was tempted to avert my eyes at times.
The Bears opened with a 73-yard touchdown run by Andrew McLaughlin with less than a minute ticked off the clock. David Mejia’s PAT gave Plainview a 7-0 lead and the Bears never looked back. Plainview led 28-0 at the end of the opening quarter on touchdown runs of 13 and 47 yards by Brody McCurdy and 3 yards by Jessie Davis. McCurdy scored again early in the second on a 36-yard run, followed by Tony Rodriquez who scored from 13 yards out. Davis added another 25-yard touchdown run just before the half giving the Bears a 48-0 lead at the intermission.
The second half saw a running clock and everyone on the Plainview roster got significant playing time. Noah White added one more touchdown on a 15-yard scoring run and Geovanny Chaparro’s PAT extended the Bears lead to 55-0. Lions’ quarterback Charles Brannan broke loose late in the fourth quarter for what looked like a certain long scoring run. However, he didn’t account for the tremendous speed of Bears’ safety Chris Culpepper, who quickly closed the distance and made a touchdown saving tackle at the Bears’ 5-yard line. The Lions were able to avoid the shutout when Cade Pridmore scored from 5 yards out on the next play. The PAT was no good and the game ended 55-6.
Plainview, who only attempted one pass all night, finished the game with 369 yards on 33 rushing attempts, averaging over 11 yards per carry. Brody McCurdy had a career night, rushing for 96 yards and three touchdowns on just three carries. Brindlee Mountain remains winless while Plainview moves to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in region play. The Lions have a much-needed bye week while the Bears travel to New Hope Friday to face the Indians in 3A, Region 7 action.
