Spring is always an exciting time for area seniors as they make future education and work plans. Plainview senior Luke Smith and Fyffe senior Kyle Blake are one step closer to realizing their plans.
On Friday, April 7, Plainview basketball star and Class 3-A State Basketball MVP may have surprised many fans by signing a golf scholarship with Northeast Alabama Community College. Smith is a well-rounded athlete capable of succeeding at any sport he sets his mind to playing.
His high school golf coach, Brook Debter, stated, “I’m extremely proud of him. He has a great attitude and work ethic. He is a great leader and example for his teammates.”
Smith will join the other Mustangs under the guidance of NACC Golf Coach Doug Haynes.
Another senior, Kyle Blake of Fyffe, made DeKalb County history Saturday, April 8, by signing the first university bowling scholarship for the county. Blake trained for his sport at Moutain Lanes Bowling Alley in Rainsville, Alabama. Alley owner Johnny Harper said he has watched Kyle become an outstanding player practicing since he was 13. Harper, an expert bowler himself, mentored Blake over his journey. Both owners, Butch Pippin and Harper expressed appreciation for the type of young man Kyle had become.
During his high school years, Blake has held the Youth State High Average of 224; was named Team Captain of the State Bowling Team; qualified for the PBA Jr. National Championship, and earned several other awards.
Blake will be bowling for Tennessee Wesleyan University under Coach Aaron White.
MVN wishes both athletes much success in the future.
