Well, it was awful hot for the first week of football. Heck, I had to leave at halftime on Thursday night because my shirt and draws were soaking wet. Ethel accused me of getting excited at the game and peeing my pants! There were some great games!
I went out to the garden, and it looked like burnt toast. Thank the lord we got some rain. It has been dry; I had a man tell me it was drier than a communion cracker. Ethel said it was drier than a bowl of uncooked oatmeal!
Okay, let’s move on to last week’s games. The Panthers of Collinsville hosted Pleasant Valley Friday night. It was not that Pleasant for the Raiders as Collinsville won 14-6. On Thursday night, Coosa Christian came looking for a win at Geraldine. Well, they got more than they wanted as the Bulldogs conquered Coosa Christian 26 – 0.
NSM dropped off the mountain at Valley Head. The Bison rumbled past the Tigers of Valley Head 15-0. The Bears of Plainview hosted the Priceville Bulldogs. The Bears played with some young folks but didn’t realize they were supposed to lose! Bears took down the Dogs 21-14.
Scottsboro went hunting for the Top Cat Trophy. It had been a long five years, but that dry spell ended as the Wildcats of Scottsboro outlasted the Wildcats of Fort Payne 56-51. Section took to the road to face Decatur Heritage. It was like the Beatles hit, Long and winding road on the way home as Decatur Heritage beat Section 63-15.
Thompson and Opelika squared off in class 7A. The Warriors of Thompson made the Bulldogs of Opelika look like pups as they won 44-13. The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame captured the US Navy in Dublin Ireland, 42-3. JSU pulled off their first win in Division 1 football as they held on for a 17-14 win over UTEP. Hawaii traveled from the Islands to Nashville to take on Vandy. The Commodores showed the Rainbow Warriors how country boys in the SEC play with a 35-28 win. Well, there you have it for week 0. Now, on to week 1!
You talk about a big game! We got us one this week. The Geraldine Bulldogs travel up Highway 75 to clash with the Fyffe Red Devils. This is what I call a head-knocking Slobber knocker of a game. Both teams have a lot of players returning. Fyffe has Anderson, Geraldine has Mann, and Fyffe has a good offensive line, and so does Geraldine. These teams match up evenly across the board. They both have really good coaches! So, what will make the difference? In a close game, experience can make the difference. Fyffe is coming from a Championship run, and they think they will win. So I say Fyffe 28-Geraldine-24.
Collinsville travels to Gaylesville. Collinsville has too many horses for Gaylesville! Panther’s win 31-14. Ider makes a trip to Asbury. Ider has a big Line on both sides of the ball. Ider win’s 28-14. Sylvania travels to Sax. The Rams will have several sacks and a bunch of touchdowns as they beat Saks 36-17.
Valley Head goes up the mountain to Section. Both teams are coming off losses. I look for the Tigers of Valley Head to down the Lions of Section 31-21. NSM travels down the hill to Dade County. The Bison are coming off a big win last week. I look for them to continue the streak with a win over Dade County. NSM wins 31-17. Lexington finds their way to Pisgah. They will wish they had got lost on the way as the Eagles of Pisgah take down Lexington 38-21.
Fort Payne heads to Etowah. The Cats had a tough loss to Scottsboro. Now, they have to get ready for the Blue Devils. I am afraid they still have a hangover from last week. Etowah 27, Fort Payne 24. Scottsboro travels on 72 to North Jackson. This is a big matchup. There ain’t no love loss between these two. Scottsboro took a big win over Fort Payne last week. Can they pull off another big one this week? I think so, but it will be a close one, with the Wildcats of Scottsboro beating the Chiefs of North Jackson 45-41. In college ball, we have Florida St and LSU playing on Sunday night. This should be a good one with Florida St. winning 24-17.
Well, there you have it from the Guru himself. Hope to see you at the game. Make sure to save me a spot by the fence. Talk to you next week!
