Hello, Folks. I sure am glad to be back. Football season is here. Sorry I missed week 0 last week. Ethel has been canning stuff out of the garden. Lord helps me! I was setting out on the front porch breaking green beans and reminiscing about football from years past. I just closed my eyes and thought about all the years I have been around for football. I heard an awful sound, opened my eyes, and right there on my porch was a BEAR! I am not joking; it was getting garbage out of the trash can. I stayed quiet and let it have all the garbage it wanted! About 15 minutes later, the big ole Bear wandered back into the woods. I screamed for Ethel, and she came a running. I told her what happened, and she said, “ You will do anything to get out of working in the garden.”
I said, “ I am not kidding.” She still didn’t believe me. Guess she will just have to find out for herself. Now, back to my reminiscing. I got my big break in writing back in 1986 or 1987. Carey Baker called me one day and asked me if I would be interested in writing an article for the Weekly Post. I asked him what kind of article he wanted and he said just talk about football like you do when you are talking to me and Gary Coker. I told him I was not much of a writer and couldn’t spell. He said just do your best, and it would be ok. And here I am, the FAMOUS Bum Pickens. I sure do miss Carey and Gary. They have both gone on to be with the Good Lord in the stadium in the sky! You talk about two Great Guys; they were the best! Anyway, this got me thinking about all the great coaches I have seen through the years. So I have decided each week to talk about coaches from my past from DeKalb County and Jackson County. There have been some good ones come through these parts. I am going to need some help. I am getting old and can’t remember all of the Great Coaches of the past. I need you to send me an E-mail. ( I did not know you could have an electric mailbox. Ethel told me to get one, and I thought she was crazy.) Anyway, send me info on coaches you can remember, and I will talk about them in my article each week. My Electric Mail Box or e-mail is moc.liamgobfsctd@2202snekciPmuB
Now, let’s talk some football! First, let’s run down week 0! Fort Payne traveled over to Scottsboro to play for the Top Cat Trophy! The Top Cat is the Fort Payne Wildcats, as they defeated Scottsboro 20-6! Valley Head went up the mountain to North Sand Mountain. This match was a slobber knocker, back and forth, but the Tigers of Valley Head pulled away in the fourth quarter to take the win 45-33.
Decatur Heritage scored late to take a 24-22 win over the Section Lions. Whitesburg Christian ran past Woodville 47-8. Priceville outscored Plainview 20-8. Ider got a safety late to defeat Crossville 8-6. Geraldine had no trouble with Coosa Christian as they won 36-7. Cornerstone Christian celebrated homecoming with a 48-0 win over Trinity. There were a couple of practice games as Fyffe missed an extra point to take a loss to Piedmont 21-20. Pisgah rolled past Glencoe 47-14. Collinsville defeated Pleasant Valley 28-7. That about covers week 0.
Let’s talk about week 1! Fyffe travels to Geraldine to try to get revenge for last year. Geraldine upset the Big Red Machine last year and stopped the 51-game winning streak. This contest is going to be a head-knocking game. Both teams are well coached. This one could go either way. I am going with Fyffe in the revenge win! Fyffe 21- Geraldine 17. Section travels to Valley Head for Brother vs. Brother. Section got the best of Valley Head last year. It will be Valley Head with the Brotherly love and win this year! Valley Head 24 Section 14. Dade County travels to NSM. NSM wins 21-17. Scottsboro travels up 72 to North Jackson. There is no love lost between these two. Scottsboro gets the win last year. This year will be a different story as North Jackson wins 28-21. Etowah comes to Fort Payne. They will leave Fort Payne with a loss, Fort Payne 27 Etowah 20. Saks takes care of Sylvania 31-21. Crossville gets their first win in a while with a 17-14 win over Collinsville. Lexington takes a home win over Pisgah 24-18. Ider beats Asbury 28-24. Jacksonville State gets the win for Rich Rod as they defeat Stephen F. Austin 24-17. Nebraska puts Coach Frost on a separate plane home as Northwestern beats Nebraska 31-24.
Again, this week is dedicated to Carey Baker and Gary Coker! They were Great Guys! They are missed in the community and the sports world.
Save me a spot by the fence. I am ready for some Football!
