There isn’t anything like fall weather and some good football. The weather is getting just right! Football is getting interesting; the grass has slowed down, no more gardens, and Ethel has not seen the Bear in over three weeks. Life just doesn’t get any better than this! We are in the process of getting running water into the house. As you remember, Ethel wanted an indoor bathroom. We had the people come out and look to see what could be done. They said we could put a bathroom in a small bedroom we have that we really don’t use. They started talking about having to run water lines. They asked me where the water came in at. I said it comes in the front door in a bucket when we draw it from the well! They told me that wouldn’t work. I would have to have water run to the house.
Lord help, I have to have a well-pump put in or get city water. This ole Boy ain’t drinking any city water. That stuff will kill a feller. So now we have a man coming to see what we can do to get water pumped from the well. This plumbing problem has turned into a nightmare. Why couldn’t we just carry the water in a bucket as we have for over forty years? And the outhouse is just fine! We have been making that trip down the backyard to the outhouse for as long as I can remember. I will keep you updated on the well and outhouse! Now let’s talk about a coach from the past.
This week we remember Coach Charles “Buddy “Hearn. Coach Hearn spent 32 years as a coach and teacher. He started his football career playing at Crossville and later coached the Lions. Hearn played at Howard College, where he was the team captain, and he played with Florida State’s Bobby Bowden. His first head coaching job was at Valley Head for two seasons. A graduate of Crossville High School, Hearn returned to his alma mater as head coach in 1955 and stayed until 1962. His Crossville team in 1961 finished the season 10-0. He moved to Guntersville High School in 1962-1963. In 1964 he became the coach of the new school Erwin. They played their first season the following year. He left for Tarrant in 1966; he was offered the head coaching job at Tarrant in 1970, and in 1971 the team went 13-0 and won the Class 3A State Championship. He would spend two years in Hueytown, three years in Etowah, three years in Litchfield, and finish his coaching career at Section in 1991. Hearn spent 24 years coaching; his record was 124-131 and 9 ties. He was named Coach of the Year by the Birmingham Post Herald in 1961. He is a member of the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame. Another Great Coach from the past. Let’s talk some football!
What a Great week of football last week. Sylvania traveled to Pisgah and plucked the Eagles 34-7. The Wildcats of Fort Payne shut out Arab 21-0. Fyffe did what they have been doing all year. They rolled past Plainview 56-13. Priceville scored two touchdowns in the last 2 ½ minutes to beat Scottsboro 28-21. Woodville smacked Brindlee Mtn. in the face with a 46-6 win. Valley Head took the sting out of Ider 56-30. Southeastern captured the Lions 48-20. Collinsville gassed Gaston 48-12. South Pittsburg won the Battle of the States 42-19, and Westbrook Christian crushed Section 59-6. Alabama had their way with Vandy 55-3. Auburn had the luck of the Tiger as they beat Missouri 17-14 in overtime. Tennessee hung on for a 38-33 win. Texas AM won on a missed field goal that bounced off the right upright by Arkansas 23-21. JSU whipped Nicholls State 52-21. Let’s get into week 6!
We have some really good match-ups this week. So let’s get this thing rolling. Ider travels to Section. Ider comes in with a 2-4 record. They have lost four straight. Section is still looking for their first win. This battle should be a good game. This is a doozy to pick. I am going with Section at home 28-21. North Jackson travels to New Hope. Another toss-up. I will go with the home team. New Hope 24 North Jackson 21. Glencoe travels to Sylvania. The Rams are playing as well as anybody in North Alabama. Sylvania wins 41-21. Collinsville vs. Fyffe. Both teams are playing well. Collinsville is very young. Fyffe is Fyffe. Fyffe wins 48-21. Guntersville travels up the road to Scottsboro. Scottsboro lost a heartbreaker last week. They won’t this week. Guntersville wins big 45 to 17. Whitesburg Christian travels to Pisgah. Pisgah is coming off a loss to Sylvania. This week is probably not a good time to play the Eagles. Pisgah wins Big! Pisgah 48 Whitesburg Christian 7. Alabama travels to Arkansas. Arkansas lost on a missed field goal. Alabama played their best game of the season with a 55-3 win over Vandy. Alabama has more talent. I think Alabama wins the game in a close one, 31-21. LSU goes to Auburn. On paper, LSU has the best team, but you have to consider that Auburn has all the luck when playing at home. This match will be a good game. I am leaning toward LSU to win 24-21, but don’t be surprised if the Auburn Tigers don’t find a way to pull off the victory!
Well, that’s my take on this week’s games. It should be a fun weekend. You may need a sleeve Friday night. Make sure to save me a spot by the fence! Have a great weekend; see you next week! Bum
