Collinsville’s Century Season Continues
By Nick Hall
Collinsville advanced to the quarterfinals of the AHSAA Class 2A Football Playoffs on Friday, November 15, with a hard-fought win over Ohatchee. Both teams played to a defensive stalemate in the first quarter. Ohatchee lit up the scoreboard first with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Foushee to Ty Lambright in the second quarter. Emerson Abac’s first of two PAT’s gave the Indians a 7-0 lead. Collinsville tied the game just before the half when Michael Tucker hit Kaleb Jones for a 12-yard touchdown strike. Jason Perez was good on his first of three PAT’s. Jones scored again from one yard out to end the third quarter with the Panthers up 14-7. Ohatchee answered midway of the fourth with a 1-yard score from Dominique Thomas to tie the game at 14-all. Collinsville countered with a game-winning drive of 62 yards. The drive began with several good runs from Jones and was capped when Jones hit Dalton Hughes for a 6-yard touchdown pass to make the final score 21-14. All it took after that was a defensive stand, and Collinsville advanced to the quarterfinals. Jones finished with 26 carries for 149 yards and a touchdown, as well as going 9-of-12 passing for 104 yards and two touchdowns. This writer said at the beginning of the season that the Panthers 100th team might be its best. While the argument could already be made, Collinsville can further solidify the claim on Friday, November 22. The second-round win sets up a Class 2A, Region 8 rematch between Collinsville and the North Sand Mountain Bison, who the Panthers defeated 54-28 during the third week of the regular season. A win over the Bison in the quarterfinals would move Collinsville’s record to 12-1 and tie them with the 1983 team for most wins in a season. It would also move the Panthers within two games of the state title that has eluded them for a century.
