By Cinthia Rico DeKalb County teams kicked off the 2023 high school cross-country season last week at the 2023 Pisgah Invitational hosted by Pisgah High School at ToKnowHIM Trails.
The field featured many local teams, including Plainview, Sylvania, Geraldine, Fyffe, Fort Payne, Collinsville, Henagar, and Crossville, for one of the area’s first major meets of the year.
In the Small Girls 5000 Meter Run, Pisgah High School’s Nevaeh Evans took first, trailed by Sylvania High School’s Aubree Cleveland, who placed 2nd with a time of 25:20.20, and Plainview High School’s Abigail Mays,who placed 3rd with a time of 25:23.79.
Plainview’s Aubrie Hiett finished 6th with a time of 26:42.12; Sylvania’s Molly Par placed 9th with a time of 27:39.29; Collinsville’s Maria Hernandez placed 10th with a time of 27:42.12; and Plainview’s Emma Graham placed 15th with a time of 28:48.47.
Plainview Girls Team finished in second place with 58 total points, Sylvania finished third with 75 points, and Collinsville finished fifth with 122 points.
In the Small Boys 5000 Meter Run, Fyffe High School’s Dawson McCollum took first with a time of 18:53.13, Plainview’s Ephan Benjume placed second with a time of 19:19.47, Sylvania’s Adrian Balderas took fourth, Plainview’s Israel Johnson took 7th, and Sylvania’s Riley Hopper placed 10th.
Plainview Boys Team finished in first place with 49 points; Madison Academy took second with 62 points; and Sylvania placed third with 75 points.
In the Large School Girls 5000 Meter Run, Fort Payne’s Kyndal Hughes took first place with a time of 23:00.67, Sara Boatwright placed 4th with a time of 24:25.91, Reese McCurdy took 5th with a time of 24:35.95, Michelle Belman took 6th with a time of 24:54.23, Ruthie Jones took 8th with a time of 25:33.5, Libby Tallent placed 11th with a time of 27:37.36, and Crossville’s Esmerelda Simon placed 12th with a time of 28:35.39.
The Fort Payne Girls team took first place with a combined 20 points, followed by Buckhorn in second with 59 points, Westminster Christian Academy in third with 62 points, and Crossville High School in fourth with 89 points.
