Story By Jeremiah Williamson
Cornerstone Christian Academy came into Meridian, Mississippi with a goal this Friday night.
That goal, going into Russell’s field to shock their fans and complete an upset.
Russell’s pass game proved to be effective and with the help of a few early penalties, they marched up the field and scored six points.
The Russell touchdown proved to be the only points in the first quarter, making the score 6-0 going into the second quarter of play.
Much of the same would be seen in the second quarter as Russell’s offense moved the ball up the field for three touchdowns in the second quarter going into the half confidently with a 26-0 lead.
Cornerstone was to be the only team to find the endzone in the third with Colby Harrison finding Jack McGullion for a 15 yard touchdown pass.
The third quarter ended with Russell up 26-6. However, they did not know what the fourth quarter would have in store for them.
Cornerstone scored two straight touchdowns both by way of the arm of Colby Harrison and the hands of Jack McGullion, putting the Eagles within six points of shocking everyone on the Warriors side.
Russell put a drive together and scored the 32nd point of the game. Any other team would have given up but the Eagles are not just any team, they got fired up and got the ball down to the Russell one yard line with time winding down.
Cornerstone’s fight would ultimately not be enough, as on fourth down they were stopped and Russell won the game 32-20.
Despite the loss, there was much to be proud of for the Eagles. Dustin Hensaw, one of the coaches for Cornerstone has this to say, “I’m not into moral victories. We fought a three and a half hour drive to Meridian, Mississippi, flags and a 20-0 deficit against a team that hasn’t lost in five years. We came out in the second half and had a goal line stand, forced two turnovers down 26-20 with five minutes left. I’ll take our guys any day of the week. Men don’t make excuses. Men just keep fighting. I watched a bunch of Eagles grow up last night.”
