by Nick Hall
Fort Payne fell to Cullman on the road Friday, October 25, 2019. The Bearcats took control early, mounting a 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive on their opening possession. The drive ended when Cullman’s Max Dueland punched into the endzone on a quarterback sneak to go up 7-0 midway of the opening period. Hunter Love and Matthew Shaddix took turns moving the ball down the field on the Wildcats’ ensuing possession, ultimately knotting things up at 7-all. Cullman counterpunched with a touchdown by Jaylen Hughey to go back on top 14-7. A penalty and a turnover killed Fort Payne’s next drive just 20 yards from their own endzone. The Bearcats took advantage and extended their lead to 21-7 after a short scoring drive ended in a Jayden Sullen touchdown. The score stood until halftime. Hunter Love asserted himself in the third quarter, eventually ending the Wildcats’ long opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown to close the distance to 21-13 after a failed 2-point attempt. Alex McPherson closed the distance even further with a 23-yard field goal to make the score 21-16 late in the third. Cullman ended the comeback with three unanswered touchdowns to go up 42-16 in the fourth quarter. Hunter Love added another late score on a 5-yard run, but in the end, Fort Payne fell to Cullman 42-23.
