Fort Payne debuted its new turf field last week in a preseason game against Chattooga (Ga.).
The Wildcats clawed their way to a 63-21 win as they captured an early lead against the Indians during the Thursday, August 11 jamboree at Wildcat Stadium.
Jake Barnes passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another as Fort Payne secured five touchdowns in the first half of play.
Barnes connected with Brannon Oliver for a 67-yard catch-and-run with a minute left in the first half.
Blake Griggs tossed a 25- yard touchdown to Nicholas Freeman, furthering Fort Payne’s lead 42-21 in the middle of the third.
Also, in the third, Ryker Ingle hyped the crowd when he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.
With minutes left of the game, Griggs rushed for a 2-yard score, and Omar Figueroa recovered an Indian Fumble that led to Fort Payne’s final touchdown of the night.
The Wildcats travel to TopCat rival Scottsboro on Friday as the two begin regular-season play at Trammell Stadium at 7 p.m.
Fort Payne has bested Scottsboro for the last three years bringing home the coveted TopCat Trophy, and hopes to add a fourth straight series win this season.
