By Cinthia Rico FYFFE – Leading 21-0 at the end of the opening quarter, No.2-ranked Fyffe cruised to victory in the Class 2A second-round playoff matchup against Lexington at Paul Benefield Stadium.
Warhorse Logan Anderson led the Red Devils on the ground, rushing 14 times for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Ryder Gipson, who delivered a solid performance, had five carries for 166 yards and three touchdowns.
Fyffe entered the game with a 10-1 record and an offense averaging 45 points per game. The Red Devils improved to an 11-1 overall record and advanced to the state playoff quarterfinals for the team’s 11th consecutive appearance.
Hitting the field with a commanding presence, Gipson broke loose for a 95-yard touchdown run on Fyffe’s first offensive play. Jesse Martin’s PAT gave the Red Devils a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
About 3:46 in, Anderson made it 14-0 with his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard rush and Martin’s point after.
With 1:11 remaining in the game, Lexington was forced to turn the ball over on downs by the Red Devils defense, and Anderson took advantage of the situation by scoring from 54 yards out. Martin’s point-after put Fyffe ahead 21-0.
The Golden Bears cut the score with Wyatt Arrowsmith’s 2-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. A pass from Brady Killen to Sean Starkey for two, making the score 21-8.
Gipson responded with an 11-yard touchdown run, and Martin’s point-after made Fyffe’s lead 28-8.
With less than 4 minutes left in the first half, Gus Fowler intercepted a pass from Killen, resulting in the Red Devils’ last touchdown drive. With 1:19 remaining, Gipson raced 15 yards up the middle for a touchdown, and Blake Dobbins ran for another point.
After receiving the kickoff in the second half, Fyffe scored in under a minute, with Anderson sprinting 44 yards to the end zone, and Martin’s kick made it 43-8.
Anderson added his final scoring from 32 yards out, and Gipson broke free for a 37-yard touchdown. Martin extended the lead to 57–16 with two more point-after kicks.
Lexington attempted a late comeback, but the Red Devils defense held strong, winning 57–24.
