By Cinthia Rico SAND ROCK – The Fyffe Red Devils swept both games of Friday’s (Mar. 29, 2024) spring break baseball doubleheader against the Sand Rock Wildcats.
Game One: Fyffe 9, Sand Rock 2 Blake Dobbins surrendered one hit and zero runs over three and two-thirds innings while striking out 10, winning the series opener 9-2.
In the third inning, the Red Devils scored two runs on an Aubrey Baker single, McBride scored on the throw, and N Summerford plated home.
Fyffe took an early 3-0 lead after Baker stole second and third and scored on a pitcher error. A ground ball to left fielder Snead resulted in a single for Summerford, and Levi O’Connor scored in the fourth.
The Red Devils held Sand Rock scoreless for five innings before the Wildcats caught a break at the hands of Lane and Ballard scored at the top of the sixth.
To secure their victory, Fyffe responded with a five-run seventh inning. Aubrey Baker drew a walk, Dobbins singled, O’Connor doubled, and Everett DeBoard singled, all of which resulted in one run each.
The Red Devils were led by Noah Summerford, who had three hits in three at-bats; Baker, who went one-for-three and had three runs batted in; and O’Connor, who had two hits in four at-bats.
Ballard took the loss for Sand Rock, giving up nine runs on 10 hits, striking out seven, and walking four over six and two-thirds innings.
Game Two: Fyffe 19, Sand Rock 4 With seven runs in the top of the first, Fyffe took an early lead, and the Red Devils dominated Sand Rock 19-4. Everett DeBoard singled and scored one run, Cooper Cox doubled and scored one run, Noah Guinn scored after tagging up, and Levi O’Connor singled and scored two runs for Fyffe.
After singles by Cooper Cox, O’Connor, and Tucker Wilks, the Red Devils added runs in the third inning from DeBoard, Guinn, Fowler, Cox, and Dobbins.
Fyffe scored seven more runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning securing a 19-4 victory of Sand Rock.
Aubrey Baker earned the win for the Red Devils on the hill, surrendering four hits and three runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking three. Gus Fowler and Everett DeBoard each appeared out of the bullpen in relief for Fyffe.
For Sand Rock, Gifford took the loss after giving up seven runs in one inning on four hits while walking two and striking out none.
