Gardendale Ends Fort Payne Run
The Gardendale Rockets ended the playoffs for the Fort Payne Wildcats 52-24.
Gardendale scored first to take a 7-0 lead. Fort Payne cut the lead to 7-3 in the second quarter on an Alex McPherson field goal. The Rockets answered as they kicked a field goal to go up 10-3 with just under 5 minutes to play in the half. The Wildcats turned the ball over on a dropped ball on a punt to give Gardendale the ball in Fort Payne territory. Gardendale scored on a 12-yard run to give them a 17-3 lead. Gardendale added one more score before the half on a 64-yard touchdown pass to go up 24-3 at the half.
In the third quarter, Fort Payne got on the board on a 53-yard touchdown from J.D. Blalock to Sawyer Burt to cut the lead to 24-10 with just over 11 minutes to play in the third quarter. Gardendale scored on a 15-yard run to extend the lead to 31-10. Fort Payne’s J.D. Blalock scored on a 2-yard run and cut the lead to 31-17. In the fourth quarter, Gardendale scored on a 61-yard scamper to go up 38-17. Fort Payne threw an interception and set Gardendale up. The Rockets scored and extended the lead to 45-17. Both teams added one more score late to give Gardendale a 52-24 victory over the Fort Payne Wildcats.
Fort Payne ends the season with an 8-3 record and runner-up in the region.
