Panthers Down Tigers
By Nick Hall
Collinsville defeated Cedar Bluff Friday night and locked up the No. 2 seed in Class 2A, Region 7 in the process. The game started as a back-and-forth defensive contest before Collinsville took advantage of a short punt by the Tigers. The Panthers only had to go 30 yards to the endzone and did it in five plays, the last of which was a 10-yard scoring run by Kaleb Jones with 3:44 left in the first quarter. Collinsville turned up the offense in the second quarter, starting with a 37-yard field goal by Jason Perez to stretch the Panthers’ lead to 10-0. The Panthers then took advantage of a bad punt snap and set up shop at the Cedar Bluff 13-yard line. Michael Tucker scored from the 10-yard line three plays later to put Collinsville up 17-0. In what appeared to be a lapse in focus, no one on the Tigers kickoff return team fielded the ensuing kick. The Panthers’ Trevor Arnold scooped it up at the 9-yard line, and Tucker punched it in from five yards out seconds later to give Fyffe a 24-0 lead going into halftime. Collinsville started the second half with a long scoring drive that culminated in Tucker’s third touchdown of the night. This one came from two yards out and extended the Panthers’ advantage to 31-0. Collinsville’s last touchdown came on a scoop-and-score by Toby Osborne. Osborne returned the Cedar Bluff fumble 23-yards, and Perez, who was perfect on the night, added his fifth PAT. When it was over, Collinsville defeated Cedar Bluff 38-0.
