Panthers Slip Past Bison
By Nick Hall
Collinsville defeated North Sand Mountain Friday night at home and, in the process, added more history to an already historic season. Neither team had ever won an AHSAA quarterfinal game, but only one could advance, and that milestone went to the Panthers. Collinsville went back and forth with the Bison, who scored first, throughout the first half. However, just before the intermission, Jason Perez kicked a 39-yard field goal to send the Panthers to the locker room with a 3-point lead. Collinsville extended that lead to nine on the first series of the second half. The Bison cut that lead to two and had a chance to go ahead in the final three minutes. That’s when Kaleb Jones sealed the game with a 15-yard pick-six touchdown, and Collinsville defeated North Sand Mountain 37-28. The win marks the first time the Panthers have reached the state semifinals under the modern playoff structure. Collinsville reached the semifinals in 1983, two years before the current system was in place. This team also tied the 1983 team for most wins in a season with 12. Should Collinsville knock off Fyffe Friday night, it would solidify the hundredth team in Collinsville’s history as unquestionably it’s best.
