The Pisgah Eagles snapped a 30-year drought with a victory over the Plainview Bears on Friday night.
The first quarter saw both teams’ defense step and hold each other scoreless. But in the second quarter, the Pisgah Eagles got on the board. The Eagles drove 90-yards in seven plays. Quarterback, Wyatt Whisnenant, hit Nick Feltman on a 35-yard pass. From there, Feltman ran 33-yards to set up a first and goal. Whisnenant punched it in from 1-yard out to give Pisgah an 8-0 lead after the 2-point conversion with just under 6 minutes to play in the half. After both teams traded possessions, with time running out, the Plainview Bears scored on a 33-yard David Majia field goal to cut the lead to 8-3 at the half.
In the second half, the Bears recovered the kickoff on a fumble to set up shop at the 40-yard line. Plainview drove 60-yards. With just under 6 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Brody McCurdy capped off the score on a 1-yard run to give the Bears an 11-8 lead with the 2-point conversion . The Pisgah Eagles tied the game on a 34-yard field goal by Paul Gallego. The score was set up on a 51-yard pass from Whisnenant to Nate Cornelison. The Eagles took the lead on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Whisnenant to Carson Wheeler to give Pisgah the lead 18-11 with just under 12 minutes to play in the game. Plainview got a break on a bad snap on a Pisgah punt that set them up at the Eagle 25-yard line. After moving the ball to the 6-yard line, Plainview’s Drew Smith punched it in for the score. The Bears elected to go for the 2-point try and the win. Plainview tried a direct snap to McCurdy but the ball sailed over his head. McCurdy retrieved the ball and made a great effort to get across the goal line but was stopped at the one yard line to cut the lead to 18-17. Pisgah was able to run out the clock and seal the hard fought victory 18-17.
Pisgah was led by Wyatt Whisnenant as he completed 3-3 passes for 134 yards. Nick Feltman rushed for 60-yards for the Eagles. For Plainview, Drew Smith had 76-yards on 19 carries and Brody McCrudy had 73-yards on 18 carries for the Bears.
Plainview will host the 5A Crossville Lions on Friday night, while the Pisgah Eagles will travel to North Sand Mountain on Friday night. Both games will kick off at 7pm.
