Story By Cinthia Rico The Plainview Bears pulled away from Ider to claim the DeKalb County Tournament championship last Saturday at Collinsville.
The Bears bested the Hornets 11-1, behind a late rally to earn their second consecutive county title.
On the victory hill, Plainview’s Sam Crowell pitched a no-hitter, allowing one run while striking out 12 over six innings.
Levi Brown and Logan Payne went 3-for-4 at the plate leading the Bears in hits. Braden Haymon, Braxton Henson, Andrew Hall, and Britton Morgan each added two hits as Plainview tallied 14 total hits.
Ider hit things off early when Will Davis grounded out and Isaac Smith scored, as the Hornets held a 1-0 advantage in the first.
Plainview fired up its offensive efforts, driving in three runs behind Payne and Brown singles in the fifth. Building on their momentum, the Bears’ big inning came in the sixth, fueled by big-hitters Payne, Morgan, Brown, and Henson, who drove in eight runs en route to an 11-1 victory.
Tyler Brewer paced Ider in the circle, surrendering eight runs on ten hits over five innings, striking out three and walking none. Griffin Weldon stepped out of the bullpen in relief, surrendering three runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning for the Hornets.
Will Davis and Skylar Haney went 0-for-3 at-bats for Ider.
Semifinals Plainview 8, Fyffe 1 Plainview defeated Fyffe 8-1 in the semifinals behind an offensive onslaught led by Andrew Hall, who hit a homer in the fourth, and Trey Rutledge, who hit a dinger in the sixth.
In the winning circle, Plainview’s Levi Brown allowed three hits and one run over five innings, while striking out seven.
Austin Anderson stepped out of the bullpen, pitching two innings in relief, striking out six.
Rutledge, Hall, and Braden Haymon recorded two hits each, while Brown, Braxton Henson, Logan Payne, Britt Morgan, Regan Davis, and Eli Sampson all added a hit for the Bears.
Blake Dobbins paced Fyffe on the mound, surrendering four runs on ten hits over five innings, striking out eight and walking one.
Cox went 1-for-4 at the plate for the Red Devils.
Ider 3, Geraldine 2 Ider edged Geraldine 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when White doubled on the first pitch lifting the Hornets past the Bulldogs.
In the winning circle, Ider’s Steven White allowed three hits and two runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out ten. Brewer stepped out of the bullpen in relief, allowing no hits and one run over two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking one.
White also led the Hornets with two hits and four atbats, while Skylar Haney and Will Davis each tallied a hit.
Owen Walling paced Geraldine on the mound, allowing three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out three. Kobe Hill, River Walling, and Austyn Bank each added a hit for the Bulldogs.
Round One Plainview 10, Crossville 0 The Bears cruised past Crossville with a 1 6 – 0 win.
Fyffe 14, Valley Head 1 Fyffe shutout Valley Head 14-1, putting the game out of reach in the first inning, and accumulating 12 runs.
The Red Devils’ offensive efforts were led by Aubrey Baker, Yahir Balcazar, and Jake Wooden. On the hill, Fyffe’s Wilks allowed one run on two hits over five innings, striking out seven.
Noah Hulgan paced Valley Head on the mound, allowing 11 hits and 14 runs over three innings and striking out seven.
William Blevins went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Tigers.
Ider 3, Sylvania 2 Ider edged Sylvania 3-2 in the opening round.
Geraldine 10, Collinsville 2 Geraldine bested Collinsville with a 10-2 victory as the Bulldogs notched two runs in the opening inning and four runs in the third, led by Jon Beck Wade, River Walling, and Owen Walling. Austyn Banks, the Geraldine hurler, allowed four hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.
Mason McAteer paced the Panthers on the mound, allowing six runs on six hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking one. Dawson Cothran went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Collinsville in hits.
