There’s an old military adage that says, “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” At no time was this more evident than when the Plainview Bears met the invading Fyffe Red Devils Friday night on the field of battle. The Red Devils, for the fifth week in a row, delivered a “shock and awe” campaign that saw Fyffe put up four rushing touchdowns, three passing touchdowns and a pick six to defeat the Bears 55-7.
Fyffe jumped out to a quick lead with 8:57 remaining in the first quarter when Zach Pyron raced 58 yards for a touchdown on a quarterback keeper. Brody Dalton’s PAT made it 7-0. Payton Anderson added to the lead just five minutes later when he took the handoff and went 24 yards for his first touchdown of the night. The Bears blocked Dalton’s PAT attempt leaving the score at 13-0. Fyffe took advantage of a Plainview fumble late in the first quarter when Anderson scored again on a 32-yard run with 26 seconds to go in the first. A two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Red Devils led 19-0.
Fyffe scored again when Pyron hit Ike Rowell for a 5-yard touchdown strike with 8:27 remaining in the half. Dalton’s PAT extended the lead to 26-0. On Plainview’s next possession, Payton Stoner picked of an Andrew McLaughlin pass. Minutes later, Pyron hit Stoner for a 30-yard scoring strike and Dalton’s PAT increase Fyffe’s lead to 33-0 with 5:56 in the quarter. With just 24 seconds in the half, Pyron threw another 30-yard touchdown strike. This time Dalton was the receiver. The errant PAT snap was handled by Rowell who hit Jake Stone in the end zone for an unplanned two-point conversion, giving the Red Devils a 41-0 lead at halftime.
Less than a minute into the third quarter, Anderson went 35 yards for his third score of the night. Dalton’s PAT extended Fyffe’s lead to 48-0. With 9:12 in the third, Fyffe ended its scoring spree on a 40-yard pick six by Pyron. The PAT made it 55-0, but the Bears spoiled the shutout with 3:45 to play when Tony Rodrigues scored from 5 yards out. David Mejia’s PAT made the final score 55-7. Fyffe (5-0, 3-0) travels to 2A, Region 8 foe Sand Rock (2-3, 1-2) while Plainview (1-5, 1-2) enjoys a much-needed bye week.
