Sylvania Boys, Girls Split Games

It was a mixed bag last week for the Sylvania boys’ and girls’ hoops teams as the Rams fell to Plainview in their first area games of the year. Both teams bounced back two nights later against Geraldine to go 1-1 in area play on the week. Here’s how it went down.
Boys
Sylvania 55, Plainview 80
Plainview controlled the game early Tuesday, December 3, leading 24-25 at the end of the opening period and 52-32 at halftime. The Rams continued to struggle in the third period before both teams let their benches finish the game. Austin Traffanstedt led the Rams with 14 points, four rebounds and one assist. Grant Atchley and Brody Smith followed with eight points each and eight and four rebounds respectively. Joshua Tinker added three points and four rebounds as well.
Sylvania 69, Geraldine 48
The Rams bounced back strong against Geraldine on December 5. Sylvania dominated the opening period 22-6 before Geraldine’s defense asserted itself and held the Rams to just seven second period points. The Bulldogs put up seven points in the second frame, but still trailed Sylvania 28-13 at halftime. The Rams outscored the Bulldogs 41-35 in the second half to secure the win. Trevor Butler led Sylvania with 12 points and two rebounds. Grant Atchley and Tinker followed with nine points each. Atchley added seven rebounds while Tinker contributed six. Smith and Traffanstedt netted eight points each and hauled in four and eight rebounds respectively.
Girls
Sylvania 55, Plainview 58
It was a close game in the first period with Plainview holding a slight 13-11 edge heading into the second. By halftime the Rams were in the lead 28-24. Sylvania maintained that lead until late. The Rams out-shot Plainview 12-9 in the third frame and held off Plainview runs more than once. The Bears finally clawed their way back to a tie in the final seconds, sending the game to overtime at 50-all. Plainview was able to overcome Sylvania 8-5 in the overtime period and escape the tenacious Rams with an extremely hard-earned win. Makayla Bullock set the scoring pace for the Rams with 15 points, three rebounds and four assists. Madison Farmer followed with 12 points and seven rebounds. Kenadie Lee had the most balanced night, recording a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Leianna Currie contributed eight points and five rebounds on the night.
Sylvania 72, Geraldine 69
The Rams flipped the script from their previous outing. This time it was that Sylvania led early, taking a 17-13 after one period. Then, just as Plainview had done two nights earlier, the Rams watched as Geraldine went on a run to take a 34-30 halftime lead. With a four-point deficit to start the second half, the Rams found themselves clawing their way back, outscoring Geraldine by three in the third period and by one in the fourth to send the game to overtime tied 61-all. Finding themselves in overtime for the second time in three nights, Sylvania was determined to create a different outcome and they did. The Rams outscored Geraldine 11-8 to get the area road win. Currie set the pace with 16 points, 2 assists and four rebounds. Womack followed with 14 points, one assist and four rebounds. Bullock added 12 points, one assist and five rebounds, while Lee contributed five points, four assists and six rebounds. Riley Wisner netted nine points while pulling down seven rebounds. Ambriel Stopyak finished with six points and eight rebounds.
