Wildcats Defeated Hazel Green
Fort Payne took down Hazel Green Friday night to remain undefeated in region play for the second consecutive year. However, a rocky start put Hazel Green on the board first when the Trojans converted an interception into points. The score came off a 13-yard strike from Patrick Mahoney to Nigel Lanier on fourth down. The Wildcats answered quickly, though with a 66-yard drive fueled by the passing and running of J.D. Blalock and Tyler Newton. Hunter Love capped the drive with a 9-yard scoring run to tie the game at 7-all. Love found the endzone again late in the opening period to give the Wildcats a 14-7 lead heading into the second quarter. Later in the second, Jarren Mitchell broke free for an 81-yard touchdown run to tie the game once more at 14-14. Fort Payne began to take control at this point. A 30-yard scoring strike from Blalock to Carter Pinholster gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 21-14 less than 10 seconds into the second quarter. A 70-yard touchdown run by Shaddix extended the Wildcats’ lead to 28-14 with 8:16 left in the first half. Fort Payne took advantage of a Robbie Graham interception late in the half when Love scored from the 7-yard line to stretch the lead to 35-14 at halftime. Alex McPherson kicked a 55-yard field goal in the third quarter to increase Fort Payne’s advantage to 38-14 just over a minute into the second half. After another defensive stop, Fort Payne mounted a 10-play, 79-yard drive that culminated with an 11-yard touchdown throw from Blalock to Shaddix to go up 45-14. The Chiefs got two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter against Fort Payne’s reserves, but it was too little, too late. In the end, Fort Payne took down Hazel Green 45-28.
