Wildcats Fall To Blue Devils
By Nick Hall
Fort Payne fell to Etowah Friday night for the Wildcats’ first loss of the 2019 season. Due to lightning in the area, the game was delayed and didn’t finish until after midnight. Turnovers proved costly for the Wildcats who scored first on an Alex McPherson field goal. The Blue Devils took the lead 6-3 with a pick-six interception by Ollie Finch with 5:20 left in the first quarter. Etowah took advantage of another turnover a few minutes later by putting together an 8-play, 79-yard scoring drive that was capped off with an 8-yard run by Martavious Davis to stretch the Blue Devils’ lead to 13-3. Another Etowah interception led to a 33-yard scoring run by the Blue Devils’ Trent Davis with 10:15 to play in the first half. That gave Etowah a 19-3 lead. McPherson missed a 52-yard field goal attempt before half, and the score stood at the break.
Fort Payne rallied in the second half when their defense put the breaks on Etowah during a fourth-down attempt at midfield. The offense then took the ball and went 61 yards in 12 plays. Hunter Love capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, followed by a 2-point conversion to make the score 19-11 late in the third quarter. The Wildcats cut the lead again with a scoop and score on an errant screen pass. The attempted 2-point conversion failed, and the score stood at 19-17 in favor of the Blue Devils. Etowah put together a 75-yard drive late, that ended when Davis scored from 25 yards out to extend the Blue Devils’ lead to 26-17. McPherson added a 42-yard field goal for the Wildcats which left them trailing 26-20. Fort Payne then attempted a successful onside kick. But repeated Hail Mary passes couldn’t find the endzone, and Fort Payne fell to Etowah 26-20.
