Third Saturday Committee Honored
At the May 21, 2019, Fort Payne City Council Meeting, Mayor Chesser presented a proclamation naming The Third Saturday Cruise Inn Committee as the 2019 Mayor’s Day of Recognition recipient. Mayor Chesser stated,” This day of recognition was created several years ago to honor individuals or groups who were of great service to the city and a help to the community.” He went on to say that the Third Saturday Cruise Inn Committee is a group that he felt has contributed greatly to the city’s reputation, economy, and the general enjoyment of the citizens as well as a lot of local people.
Amelia Landstreet, Terry Locklear, and Steve Westmoreland represented the several-member committee by accepting the proclamation on the group’s behalf. Mayor Chesser offered the city’s gratitude and sincere heartfelt thanks for the 2019 Mayor’s Day of Recognition recipient.

Mayor Chesser announced during his Mayor’s Report that July 1, 2019, is the date for opening bids on the Terrapin Hills to 49th Street Sewer Project, and September 1, 2019, is the date set for the Airport Road to WZOB Radio Station Sewer Project Bids.
Chesser also informed the public that the recently slain Auburn Police Officer, William Buechner, had ties to the Fort Payne Community through Jo Harris and Betty Reece. Area flags were flown at half-staff in honor of the officer killed while on duty.
The mayor reported that the city election legislation that the city sent to the Alabama Legislators has passed both the House and Senate and is ready to make the city’s election process in line with that of other Alabama cities.
The last item on the agenda was to allow local citizens to address the council. Frankie Green read a statement to the council explaining a problem she is experiencing with a local Chert Pit company that sends trucks down her narrow road approximately 300 times daily sometimes seven days a week causing extreme noise and health issues for her. She stated the route they daily take also makes it unsafe to walk in the area and causes problems for local families paying their respects at White Hall Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the state. Green lives on North Highway 11 and her house is the last house inside the Fort Payne City Limits. Her house faces Highway 11 and White Hall Cemetery Road. Green suffers from several health problems, and she stated the noise and dust from the trucks are endangering her health and safety.
Councilman Wade Hill responded to Green stating he had witnessed the situation and agreed it was a problem, but since the company is located in the county and not the city, a clear answer to the problem has not been settled. He assured her that the city would look into the situation and try to come up with a legal solution to her problem.
