Walter & Christine Brooks Day
At the May 28, 2019, DeKalb County Commission Meeting, DeKalb County Commission President, Rickey Harcrow, officially declared this day as Walter & Christine Brooks Day in DeKalb County. The Commission presented the couple with a Proclamation because of the longevity of their seventy-one-year marriage. The couple, now in their nineties, married on December 12, 1947, after Walter returned from the service. Family members were present at the meeting to join the couple on their special day. The Brooks have four children, Robert (now deceased), Joleen Gilbert, Norma Hulgan, and Martha Browder along with several grandchildren. President Harcrow spoke of how rare it is now to see a couple married for as long as the Brooks and commended them on the accomplishment. In a prepared statement from the Brooks, President Harcrow expressed their secret for success. The couple stated, “We treat each other like we want to be treated.” Harcrow added,” This advice is good for everyone.”
